Alright, let’s talk about my little experiment with hair dye that has ammonia in it. I’ve always been curious about changing up my hair color, but I was a bit nervous about the whole process, especially when I heard about the strong smell and potential damage from ammonia.
So, I decided to give it a shot anyway. I did some reading, and it turns out ammonia is used in hair dyes to open up the hair cuticle, allowing the color to penetrate better. But it’s also known to be pretty harsh, so I made sure to get a dye that also had some conditioning ingredients.
Preparation
Before I started, I did a strand test. You know, just to make sure I wouldn’t have a bad reaction or end up with a color I hated. I mixed a small amount of the dye and applied it to a small, hidden section of my hair. Waited for the recommended time, rinsed it off, and thankfully, everything looked good.
Dyeing Process
Next up, the actual dyeing. I put on an old t-shirt and some gloves, because this stuff can stain. I mixed the dye according to the instructions in the box. It was a bit messy, and yeah, the smell was pretty strong. I made sure to open a window to get some ventilation going.
- Mixed the developer and color cream in the provided bottle.
- Shook it well until it was all blended.
- Applied the dye to my hair, starting at the roots and working my way down.
- Made sure every strand was covered.
Then, I set a timer and waited. It felt like forever, but I followed the instructions on the box to a T. Finally, time was up, and I hopped in the shower to rinse it all out. I used the conditioner that came with the dye, hoping it would help with any potential dryness.
Results
After drying my hair, I was actually pretty happy with the results. The color was vibrant and even, and my hair didn’t feel too fried. It definitely felt a bit drier than usual, but nothing a good deep conditioner couldn’t fix. I’ve been using color-safe shampoo and conditioner since then, and the color has held up pretty well.
Overall, it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. Just make sure you do your research, do a strand test, and follow the instructions carefully. And maybe invest in a good hair mask to keep your hair happy and healthy afterward!
