So, today I wanted to try something new in the kitchen, and I ended up making roasted gram. I had seen a bunch of stuff online about it being a healthy snack and all that, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
I started by looking around for some recipes. There’s a whole bunch of them out there, all kinds of variations. But I just wanted to keep it simple this time. So, I grabbed some chana dal, the split kind, from the pantry. I’ve heard it called Bengal gram or Kala Chana, whatever that means. Anyway, I wanted that roasted flavor, you know?
First, I took the gram and just tossed it in a dry pan. No oil or anything. I put it on low heat and kept stirring for about five minutes. The goal was to get them nice and crunchy. You can tell they’re done when they start to smell a bit nutty, kind of like popcorn.
Roasting the Gram
- Grab a pan, no need for oil.
- Toss in the chana dal.
- Low heat, keep stirring for about 5 minutes.
- Wait for that nice, toasty smell.
After the gram was roasted, I took it out of the pan and let it cool down a bit. Then, just for kicks, I also roasted some chia seeds in the same pan. Only took a couple of minutes for those. I’ve heard they’re good for you, so why not add them in, right?
Adding Chia Seeds
- Same pan, toss in some chia seeds.
- Roast for 2-3 minutes.
Once everything was cooled down, I just mixed the roasted gram and chia seeds together. And that was it! A super simple, and apparently healthy, snack. It was actually pretty tasty, kind of earthy and nutty like they said.
From what I read, this roasted gram is supposed to be good for you. They say it helps with weight and has all these health benefits. It’s also supposed to be a good source of protein and fiber. I don’t know about all that, but it tasted good, and it was fun to make.
I’ve seen people eat this stuff with milk or yogurt, but I just ate it plain. I might try it different ways later. There are so many recipes out there. Some people use it in soups and other dishes to make them thicker. I saw one article that talked about using it in bread, of all things. There are just so many ways to use this stuff. But for now, I’m happy with my simple roasted gram snack.
Next time, I might try one of those fancier recipes. But for a first try, I think this was pretty good. It’s definitely something I’ll make again. It’s easy, it’s tasty, and it’s supposed to be good for you. What more could you ask for in a snack?
