Alright, let’s talk about makin’ that rose water for your face, you know, the kind all them fancy folks use. I ain’t no fancy pants myself, but I know a thing or two about makin’ do with what ya got. This ain’t gonna be no complicated city-slicker recipe, just plain and simple, like how my grandma used to do it, God rest her soul.
First off, you gotta get yourself some roses. Now, don’t go pickin’ just any ol’ roses from the side of the road, ya hear? You want the good stuff, the kind that smells real strong. I heard some folks call ‘em Rosa damascena, Rosa centifolia, or Rosa gallica. Sounds all highfalutin, but all it means is they smell real nice and you can eat ‘em too, if you’re so inclined. Don’t go eatin’ the ones from the flower shop, though, they spray ‘em with all sorts of nasty stuff.
Once you got your roses, you gotta pluck off the petals. Just the petals, mind you, not the green stuff or the pokey stems. Get a big ol’ pot, the kind you use for makin’ stew, and throw them petals in there. Don’t be stingy with the petals, the more the better, that’s what I always say.
Then, you gotta add water. But not just any water, mind you. You want clean water, like that stuff they sell in bottles, or if you got a good well, that’ll do too. Pour enough water in the pot to just cover the petals, don’t go drownin’ ‘em. You just want enough to let them petals do their magic.
- Get a pot, a big one.
- Put the rose petals in the pot.
- Pour water in, just enough to cover them petals.
Now, put that pot on the stove. Turn the fire on low, real low, like you’re simmerin’ beans. You don’t want it boilin’ like crazy, just a gentle simmer. Let it simmer for a good long while, maybe half an hour or so. You’ll know it’s ready when the petals look all pale and washed out, like they gave up all their color to the water. That’s when you know the water’s got all that rose goodness in it.
Then, you gotta let it cool down. Don’t go burnin’ yourself now! Once it’s cool enough to handle, you gotta strain it. Get yourself a clean cloth, like a cheesecloth or even a thin kitchen towel, and pour the water through it into a bowl or somethin’. This gets rid of all them petals and leaves you with just the rose water.
Now you got your rose water! See? Wasn’t so hard, was it? You can use it all sorts of ways. Some folks put it in a spray bottle and spritz it on their face, makes ‘em feel all refreshed, I guess. If you’re gonna put it on your face, you might want to mix it with a little more water, don’t want it too strong, you know. I heard tell you can mix it with other water, about one part rose water to three parts regular water. And if you’re feeling fancy, you can add a drop or two of them smelly oils, they call ‘em essential oils. But don’t go mixin’ it with any of that strong acid stuff, I heard that ain’t good for your skin. It’ll make you all red and itchy, like a poison ivy rash.
And that’s all there is to it. Plain and simple, just like I promised. Now go on and make yourself some rose water, you’ll feel like a queen, or at least a well-hydrated peasant. And remember, roses, they ain’t just for lookin’ at, they got all sorts of uses, if you just know how to use ‘em.
Anyways, I gotta go now, got chores to do. But you remember what I told ya, and you’ll be just fine. You don’t need no fancy city-slicker ways to take care of yourself. Just a little bit of know-how and a whole lot of elbow grease. That’s the secret to a good life, and good skin too, I reckon.
