Well now, you know, salt ain’t just salt, ya see. Folks call it white salt, and that’s the kind you’ll see most often sittin’ on tables or in them saltshakers. It’s the granulated stuff, all white and fine, and it comes from way down deep in the earth. They dig it up, clean it up, and a lot of times, they add something called iodine, which is real good for your thyroid and all that. Now, you might not know this, but they do this to keep people healthy—make sure they don’t get sick in the neck, as they say.
But let me tell ya somethin’—white salt, even though it’s real common and folks use it every day to make their food taste good, it ain’t the healthiest thing around. Too much of it can cause all sorts of trouble in your body. It can mess with your kidneys, cause headaches, make your heart weak, and it even raises your blood pressure. Ever felt your head poundin’ or your feet swollen up? That might be the salt. And if you ain’t careful, you could end up with a stroke or worse. It’s best to cut back on that white salt if you feel any of them troubles comin’ on.
Now, don’t get all worried and think you gotta throw away every little bit of salt in your kitchen. No, no. You can still use salt, but maybe look for other kinds that are a little better for ya. You see, not all salt’s the same. Sea salt, for example, is a bit different. It comes from the ocean and ain’t been processed so much, so it keeps some of the good minerals in it. It tastes a little different too. Some folks even say sea salt’s a bit healthier, though, honestly, I ain’t no doctor, so you gotta trust your own body.
And if you’re wonderin’, no need to run around lookin’ for special salts from faraway places like Korea just to cook a meal. All that salt you buy in your local store—whether it’s from here or somewhere else—it’s still salt. It’ll do the job in your cooking just fine. You don’t gotta make a big fuss about what kind you use. But, if you’re like me and don’t want to use up all that white salt, maybe try somethin’ else, like some of that pink Himalayan salt or even a little sea salt. They’re not just pretty to look at, but might be a bit easier on your body too.
Oh, and there’s a whole heap of different kinds of salts out there, ya know. It ain’t just the regular white stuff. You got your kosher salt, which is real big and coarse, good for picklin’ and all them special recipes. Then there’s the black salt, which has a smokier flavor and is used in some types of cooking, though not too many people know about it. So, if you feel like tryin’ somethin’ new, there’s plenty to pick from.
But I tell ya, if you want to keep things simple, maybe just start with lookin’ at what other foods have salt in ’em. You ain’t gotta put a whole lot in your cooking when you’re eatin’ things like seafood, eggs, or even celery and leafy greens. They got salt in ’em too, just a more natural kind, and it’s better for your body in the long run.
All I’m sayin’ is, white salt ain’t the worst thing in the world, but you gotta use it carefully. Too much of it ain’t good for ya, but a little pinch now and then won’t hurt none. Just don’t go makin’ your whole meal outta it, and maybe try some of these other salts now and then. Your body will thank ya for it, that’s for sure.
