Well, let me tell ya, this hair thing, it’s a whole mess when it gets humid out. You know, that sticky, wet air? Yeah, that stuff. Drives me crazy! I swear, sometimes my hair feels like a dang haystack, all dry and brittle, and other times it’s just a poofy mess, like I stuck my finger in a light socket. So, does humidity dry out hair? It’s complicated, like tryin’ to figure out why the rooster crows at 4 in the morning.
Sometimes it makes it dry, sometimes not, who knows!
Now, some folks say humidity is good for your hair, makes it all full and bouncy. Maybe for them city gals with their thin, limp hair, that’s true. But for an old gal like me, with hair that’s got a mind of its own, it’s just trouble. It gets all frizzy, like a worn-out broom, you know? And the ends, oh Lord, the ends get so dry and split, like dead weeds in the summer sun.
- It can make your hair all poofy, like a cotton ball.
- It can make your hair so dry, it feels like straw.
- It can make your hair so frizzy, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.
I tell ya, it ain’t just the humidity itself, it’s what you do to your hair too. Washin’ it all the time? Bad idea. You wash away all the good oils, the ones that keep your hair from gettin’ all dried out. It’s like washin’ the flavor out of a good stew. Then, when the humid air hits, your hair just soaks it up and gets all messed up.
You gotta be smart about it, like a fox in the henhouse.
Some folks say you gotta use special shampoos and stuff. “Anti-frizz” they call it. Sounds fancy, but I don’t know. I just try not to wash my hair too much, maybe once or twice a week, unless I’ve been workin’ in the garden and got dirt all over it. And I always try to keep it covered when I go outside, you know, with a scarf or a hat. Keeps the sun and the damp air off it.
Now, they say there’s stuff in them hair products, “humectants” they call ‘em, glycerin and such. They’re supposed to help, but sometimes I think they make it worse. Makes my hair all sticky and attracts more dampness, like flies to honey. It’s all a bunch of hooey if you ask me.
The weather, it plays a big part too. Not too hot, not too wet, that’s the best. But we don’t get to choose the weather, do we? It does what it wants, like a stubborn mule. So, you just gotta do the best you can. Find what works for you, and stick with it. Maybe it’s a special shampoo, maybe it’s a hat, maybe it’s just leavin’ your hair alone.
You gotta figure it out yourself, nobody can tell you what to do.
The bottom line is, this humidity thing, it ain’t simple. Sometimes it dries your hair out, sometimes it makes it frizzy, sometimes it does both at the same time! It’s enough to make a body pull their hair out, if it wasn’t already so dry and brittle from the humidity, that is. So, you just gotta try different things, see what works, and pray for a dry day. And if all else fails, just wear a hat. That’s what I do.
Keep it covered, keep it simple, and maybe, just maybe, your hair will behave itself. But probably not. Hair’s like kids, always causin’ trouble one way or another.
