Alum Paste: What Is It and How to Make It?
You know, back in my days, we didn’t have all these fancy things. If somethin’ was broke, we fixed it. If somethin’ was needed, we made it. Simple as that. And this alum paste thing, well, it ain’t new. Folks been usin’ it for ages, for all sorts of stuff. Let me tell ya about it.
What the heck is alum paste anyway?
Well, it’s this kinda goopy stuff, made from somethin’ called alum. Alum, it’s like a powder, looks a bit like salt, but it ain’t. It’s got this…this somethin’ in it that tightens things up, makes stuff firm. People use it for canker sores, you know, them little owies in your mouth? Yep, it helps with that. Some folks even use it for styptic, to stop bleedin’ if ya cut yourself shavin’. And guess what? It can even make pickles crunchier! Who knew, right?
How to make this alum paste, the old-fashioned way
Now, makin’ this paste ain’t rocket science. It’s easy-peasy, even I can do it, and I ain’t no spring chicken no more. Here’s what you gotta do. First, you need to get yourself some alum. You can find it in the store, usually in the spice aisle or where they keep them canning supplies. They call it potassium alum, so look for that.
- First, get yourself a clean bowl or bucket. Plastic is good, no need for fancy stuff.
- Then, pour in about a cup of that alum powder. Don’t gotta be exact, just eyeball it, ya know?
- Next, dump in a bit of salt. Yeah, just regular ol’ salt. Maybe a couple of tablespoons or so. This ain’t bakin’ a cake, it ain’t gotta be perfect. The salt, it kinda helps the alum do its job better, or so they say.
- Now, the tricky part. You gotta add some water, but not too much at once. Just a little bit at a time. Warm water is good. Stir it all up real good, like you’re makin’ gravy. Keep addin’ water and stirrin’ until it turns into a paste. Not too runny, not too thick. Just right. Like, you know, toothpaste kinda thick.
- Some folks add a tiny splash of club soda. Says it makes it fizzier or somethin’. I dunno, I never did it that way, but you can try it if you want.
And that’s it! You got yourself some alum paste. Store it in a jar with a lid, so it don’t dry out. Keep it in a cool, dry place, and it’ll last ya a good long while.
Other things you might wanna know
Now, a few things to keep in mind. This alum stuff, it can be a bit strong. So, if you’re usin’ it on a canker sore, don’t go slatherin’ it on. Just a tiny dab will do ya. And don’t swallow it! It ain’t poison or nothin’, but it ain’t meant to be eaten. And if you got sensitive skin, maybe test it on a small patch first, just to be safe. Don’t wanna go around lookin’ like a beet, now do ya?
And, one more thing. There are other ways to make a paste for different things, you know. Like, for bakin’ and stuff. You can make a paste outta almond flour and powdered sugar, just by mixin’ ‘em up real good in one of them fancy food choppers. But that’s a whole ‘nother story for another day.
So, there you have it. Alum paste, plain and simple. It might not be the prettiest thing in the world, but it sure is handy to have around. Just like good ol’ common sense, it can fix a lot of little problems. And in my book, that’s worth more than all the fancy store-bought stuff you can find.
Why this stuff is still good today?
Even with all the newfangled things in the stores, some old remedies like alum paste are still good. They work, they are cheap, and they don’t have a bunch of chemicals you can’t even pronounce. Simple is often best, like I always say. You don’t always need somethin’ fancy or expensive to get the job done.
So next time you got a little owie in your mouth or a small cut that won’t stop bleedin’, don’t go runnin’ to the store right away. Try makin’ some of this alum paste, you might be surprised at how well it works. It’s a good thing to have around, just in case.
