Okay, so, a while back I had this super annoying problem – head lice. Yeah, not fun at all. I tried a bunch of stuff, but nothing really seemed to work. Then, I remembered reading somewhere that coconut oil could help. I was like, “Why not give it a shot?”
So, I grabbed a jar of coconut oil from my kitchen. First, I warmed it up a bit, just so it would be easier to apply. Then, I started massaging it into my hair. I mean, I really went for it, making sure every single strand was coated. I put on one of those plastic shower caps that you get in hotels.
- I left the cap on for a good eight hours. I figured the longer, the better, right? The idea is that the oil suffocates the lice. Kind of gross, but hey, if it works, it works.
- After the eight hours were up, I took off the cap and started combing through my hair with a fine-toothed comb. This part was tedious, let me tell you. I combed and combed, trying to get all those dead lice and their eggs (nits) out.
I did this a couple of times, just to be sure. And guess what? It actually worked! I couldn’t believe it. The lice were gone. The coconut oil thing is the real deal.
A while back, I found that anise oil might work, too. It said something about it coating the lice and suffocating them. That kind of stuff is really helpful for the parents.
Oh, and you know what else I heard works? Vinegar. Apparently, it has some properties that can kill lice and get rid of the nits. Some folks mix it with warm water and apply it to their scalp. Might be worth a try if you’re dealing with these little buggers.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Make sure you really saturate your hair with the coconut oil. Don’t be shy with it!
- Be patient with the combing. It takes time to get all the dead lice and nits out.
- You might need to repeat the process a couple of times to make sure you get them all.
Anyway, that’s my experience with using coconut oil for head lice. It worked for me, so I thought I’d share. Hope this helps someone out there!
