Okay, so I saw this question online the other day – “can you juice kiwi with skin on?” – and it got me thinking. I’ve always peeled my kiwis before juicing, but hey, if I can save some time and get extra nutrients, why not? So, I decided to give it a go and see what happens.
First things first, I grabbed a few kiwis from my fridge. I usually go for the organic ones, since you are eating the skin in this experiment. Then, I washed them thoroughly under cold water. The fuzziness of the skin always makes me wonder how much dirt it’s trapping, you know? Better safe than sorry.
Now, for the fun part. I decided to try two methods: using my juicer and my trusty old blender.
Juicer Method:
- I cut the kiwis in half.
- Then I cut the halves into quarters to fit them into the juicer chute.
- I simply popped them into my juicer, skin and all.
The juicer whirred, and out came this vibrant green juice. It looked pretty much the same as when I juice peeled kiwis, maybe a tad darker. I took a sip, and honestly, I couldn’t really taste the skin. It was just as refreshing and tangy as usual. There might have been a slightly more “earthy” aftertaste, but nothing unpleasant.
Blender Method:
- I cut the kiwis into chunks that were about the same size.
- Into the blender they went, again, with the skin on.
- I added a bit of water to help it blend smoothly.
The blender had a bit more work to do, as expected. The result was a thicker, smoothie-like consistency. This time, I could see tiny specks of the skin in the juice. Tasting it, the texture was definitely different. It wasn’t bad, but you could feel the slight grittiness of the skin. The flavor was still good, though, just like a regular kiwi smoothie, just a little more fibrous and filling. I guess this was the “rustic” approach.
My verdict? Juicing kiwis with the skin on is totally doable, and actually pretty great! You get all those extra vitamins and fiber from the skin, which is a big plus. If you’re using a juicer, you probably won’t even notice the skin. With a blender, the texture is a bit different, but still enjoyable. It might not taste great on its own but blending it really helps you to get all the nutritional benefits from the skin!
I am going to get a good night’s sleep after this experiment, I am sure. I read online that kiwi can help with sleep. It’s just a win-win all around. Give it a try, you might be surprised!
From now on, I’m definitely going to be less hesitant about leaving the skin on, especially when I’m in a hurry.
I encourage you to experiment and find what you like best. Happy juicing!
