So, the other day, I woke up late for work, and my hair was a greasy mess. You know those mornings, right? No time for a proper shower, but I couldn’t exactly go out looking like I’d dipped my head in a vat of oil. I remembered seeing something online about using baby powder as dry shampoo, and I thought, “What the heck, let’s give it a shot.”
I grabbed my daughter’s bottle of baby powder—she’s long past the diaper stage, but we still keep some around for various things. I sprinkled a little bit onto my hands—not too much, just a small dusting. Then, I flipped my head over and started rubbing the powder into my roots, focusing on the oiliest parts around my crown and hairline.
- First I poured a little baby powder into my hands.
- Then I flipped my head over.
- Next I rubbed the powder into my hair roots.
- Finally I brushed out any white residue.
It felt a little weird at first, kind of like I was back in the 18th century powdering a wig or something. But I kept at it, massaging the powder in and trying to distribute it evenly. I could see the powder absorbing the oil as I worked it through. It took a few minutes, but slowly, my hair started to look less like an oil slick and more like, well, actual hair.
Once I felt like I’d gotten most of the grease, I flipped my head back up and brushed through my hair with a boar bristle brush to get rid of any leftover white residue. There was a bit of a powdery look at first, but it faded pretty quickly as I brushed and shook out my hair.
My Thoughts
Honestly, I was surprised by how well it worked. My hair looked way less greasy, and it even had a bit of extra volume. It didn’t feel as clean as a real wash, of course, but it was definitely presentable enough for a day at the office. I wouldn’t use it every day, I think. It’s a great quick fix, not a replacement for actually washing your hair.
I’ve heard some people say you should use cornstarch instead of baby powder, especially if you’ve got dark hair. I’ve got light brown hair, so the white powder wasn’t really noticeable on me. I guess it’s just a matter of trying it out and seeing what works best for your hair type. I think I will keep baby powder for this using.
