This dragon fruit, my goodness, it is a weird thing. See that skin, like dragon scales. And the inside, some white, some red, just like that pig’s blood but much brighter. I heard people say it’s good for you, but who knows for sure?

They say this dragon fruit has sugar. Well, ain’t that something? Everything got sugar these days. Even that fancy fruit from far away. But it’s not like the white sugar we put in our tea. It is the fruit sugar. I heard it is better than white sugar. And I heard that sugar in dragon fruit is not too much.
But still, sugar is sugar. You eat too much, you get fat. And too much of it ain’t good for your teeth neither. My old man lost all his teeth. Ate too much candy when he was a boy, I reckon. So, this dragon fruit, it is fine to eat it sometimes. Don’t eat it everyday, then you will be fine.
Red Dragon Fruit and White Dragon Fruit
I saw two kinds of this dragon fruit. One got red skin and white inside. The other, red skin and red inside. That red one, it stains your hands something fierce. Like you been butchering a chicken or something. My neighbor, she give me one, but I had no idea how to eat it. I cut it open and juice just went everywhere. Oh, what a mess!
They say the red dragon fruit is better. More of that good stuff in it. What was it called? Anti-something. Keeps you young, they say. Well, I’m old as the hills already, so I don’t know if it’ll do me any good. But the young folks, maybe it will help them. I saw it on TV, they say it is good for your head. And keep your brain healthy.

And there is another one, the yellow dragon fruit. They called it Colombiana. Sounds like a place, isn’t it? I never seen it before, only heard about it. People say this yellow one is the best. Sweetest of them all. Like honey. I don’t know where they find it. Probably in those fancy stores in the city. We don’t have those here.
That yellow one, it is probably good for you, too. I don’t know, all these fruits. So many kinds. But this yellow one, they say it is even better than the red one. I wish I can try it one day. They say it is very sweet. Sweeter than the red one. And I like sweet fruit.

How Much Sugar in Dragon Fruit?
So, how much sugar is in these dragon fruits? Well, not as much as you think. They say it is natural sugar. Not like that candy sugar. That candy sugar is bad for you. This fruit sugar, it is okay, they say. It is good for your body. And you need some sugar to keep you going. Just don’t eat the whole thing. I eat it like twice a week. Sometimes three times. But you need to eat other things, too. Don’t just eat dragon fruit.
My grandson, he is a picky eater. He won’t eat anything green. But he loves this dragon fruit. He likes the red one. I told him, “Don’t eat too much, you’ll get a tummy ache.” He did not listen to me. And then he got a tummy ache. I told him, eat some rice. Rice always good for tummy ache.
So, this dragon fruit, it is a good fruit. It is got sugar, but not too much. It is good for you, they say. Just don’t eat too much. And remember to eat it with other food. Everything in moderation, that’s what my mama used to say. She is a wise woman. If you can get your hands on it, try the yellow dragon fruit. They say it is the best.
And if you see my grandson, tell him to eat his vegetables. He needs to eat more than just dragon fruit. He is growing up, he needs all kinds of food. Not just the sweet stuff. But the dragon fruit is good, too. Just remember what I said, not too much of anything.
This dragon fruit is not cheap, either. So you don’t want to waste money to buy too much. It is very good. But you need to save some money to buy other things. Vegetables, meat, and rice. You need them all to be healthy.
