Alright, alright, let’s talk about this here “wet walnuts” thing. My grandkid told me it’s a big deal on the internet, so I figured, why not? I ain’t no fancy cook, but I know my way around the kitchen, ya hear?
So, what are these wet walnuts anyway? Sounds kinda funny, don’t it? Like someone dropped ’em in the creek. But it ain’t nothin’ like that. It’s just a way to make walnuts taste real good, I guess. Sweeter, maybe. More…I dunno…interesting.
First things first, you gotta get yourself some walnuts. Not the ones already all chopped up, mind you. Get the ones in the shell, if you can. Crack ’em open yourself. It’s a bit of work, yeah, but it’s worth it. Them pre-shelled ones, they just ain’t the same, you know? They lose somethin’. Maybe the spirit, like my old man used to say.
Now, you need some sugar. Plain white sugar is fine. Don’t go gettin’ all fancy with that brown sugar or that powdered stuff. We ain’t makin’ no cake here. Just good ol’ wet walnuts. And you’ll need some water, too. Clean water, mind you. Don’t go usin’ no ditch water.
- Walnuts – Get them in the shell, it’s much better.
- Sugar – Just plain white sugar, that’s all you need.
- Water – Make sure it’s clean.
Alright, so here’s how I do it. It ain’t rocket science, so don’t you go frettin’. Get yourself a pan, a small one is fine. Put in your walnuts, just a handful or two, depends on how many you want. Then, pour in some sugar. How much? Well, that depends on how sweet you like things. Me, I like things pretty sweet, so I put in a good amount. Let’s say, for a handful of walnuts, maybe a quarter cup of sugar? Yeah, that sounds about right.
Then, add some water. Not too much, just enough to make the sugar wet. See why they call it wet walnuts now? Heh! You want it to be kinda syrupy, you know? Like, not swimmin’ in water, but not dry either. It’s tricky, I know, but you’ll get the hang of it.
Now, put that pan on the stove. Keep the heat low, real low. You don’t wanna burn the sugar, that’ll make it taste awful. And keep stirrin’. Stir, stir, stir. That’s the key. You gotta keep them walnuts movin’ around so they all get coated with that sugary syrup. It’ll take a few minutes, maybe five or ten, depends on your stove. You’ll see the sugar start to melt and turn into a glaze. That’s what you want.
Keep stirrin’ till the walnuts are all shiny and coated with that sweet stuff. And then…well, that’s it! They’re done! Take ’em off the stove and let ’em cool. Don’t go burnin’ your mouth on them hot walnuts now!
Now, some folks like to add other things to their wet walnuts. I heard some folks put in cinnamon, or a bit of vanilla. Me? I like them plain. Just walnuts, sugar, and water. That’s all you need, in my opinion. But you can experiment, if you want. It’s your kitchen, your walnuts, you do what you want!
You can eat these wet walnuts just like that, as a snack. Or you can put ’em on top of ice cream, or yogurt, or whatever you fancy. They’re good on oatmeal too, I tell ya. Or you can just keep ’em in a jar and sneak a few whenever you feel like it. That’s what I do, mostly.
So, there you have it. My way of makin’ wet walnuts. It ain’t fancy, but it’s good. Real good. And it’s easy, too. Even an old woman like me can do it. So go ahead, give it a try. You might just surprise yourself.
And remember, cooking ain’t about following some fancy recipe perfectly. It’s about makin’ something good with what you got. And having a little fun along the way. That’s what my mama always said, bless her heart.
Now go on, get to crackin’ them walnuts! And don’t forget to clean up after yourself. A messy kitchen ain’t a happy kitchen.
